BOYS

Corning remains perfect

The Corning boys soccer team continues to be unbeatable, even as Northern Athletic League teams are getting their second shots at the undefeated Cardinals.

The Cardinals escaped Susanville on Tuesday with a 2-1 victory over Lassen, and Corning's only remaining challenges in league will be at home.

Alejandro Arce and Freddy Carrillo scored goals and Clemente Arreguin netted a key assist in the win.

Jorge Machado stopped six of Lassen's shots on goal, shutting the Grizzlies down in the second half to enable his offensive teammates to garner a lead.

Corning took 21 shots on goal, led by six from Cesar Ruiz. Carrillo took aim four times and Arce and Rafael Graciano each attacked the net thrice.

Yreka and West Valley, who were both handed 2-1 defeats on their own turf by Corning, have to come to Cardinal territory for the backswing of the NAL season.

The Cards (7-0 NAL, 12-0) hosted the Miners on Thursday and play at Central Valley on Tuesday. Corning spanked the Falcons 12-0 last time.

Orland boots Sutter in road game

The Trojans posted a 3-1 win Tuesday at Sutter to improve their record to 10-2-2 overall and 7-1-2 in the BVL, where they were alone at the top of the standings.

No statistics were available before press time.

The Trojans play at Willows Thursday and host Gridley Tuesday.

Colusa handles Hamilton

The Redskins had little trouble in handling visiting Hamilton Tuesday, vanquishing the Braves 5-0.

Jaime Garcia notched a pair of goals, while Thomas Gentil, Diego Valdivia and Luis Benitez each scored single goals.

Benitez also picked up a pair of assists, with Valdivia, Freddy Hernandez and Hershey Pedraza each assisted on goals.

Christian Avila was only called upon to make four saves, as his teammates were busy peppering the Braves' goal with 32 shots.

Colusa improved its season record to 4-9-1, and its SVL mark to 4-8, before playing at Durham Thursday and heading to Esparto Tuesday.

Hamilton saw its record fall to 3-6-1 before heading to Live Oak (7-4-2, 7-3-2) Thursday. The Braves host Pierce Tuesday.

GIRLS

Colusa continues winning ways

Nansi Villanueva notched two more goals giving her 23 for the season, and Kristy Nair booted another to lead the Lady Redskins to a 3-0 shutout over visiting Hamilton Tuesday.

Jessica Garcia was credited with a pair of assists for Colusa, with Nair also assisting on one of Villanueva's scores.

Keepers Kelsie Kiely and Katelyn Mena split time in goal to team up for the shutout.

Colusa stayed unbeaten at 12-0-1 overall and 11-0-1 in the SVL, with road games at Durham Thursday and Esparto Tuesday.

Hamilton (4-5-1, 1-2-2) played at Live Oak Thursday and hosts Pierce Tuesday.

Williams holds Pierce scoreless

The Lady Yellowjackets tamed the visiting Bears Tuesday, blanking them 4-0.

Statistical information was not provided for either team.

Williams improved to 8-2-1 and 7-1-0, while Pierce was 0-10-1, 0-9 in league play.

The Lady Jackets played at Rio Vista Thursday and travel to Live Oak Tuesday, while Pierce heads to Hamilton Tuesday and hosts Rio Vista Thursday.

Orland shut out by Sutter

Sutter scored twice in the first half and added three more goals in the second Tuesday to defeat Orland 5-0.

The Lady Trojans (4-9-1, 2-7-1) are on the road at Willows (3-7-2, 2-5-0) Friday, and host Gridley Tuesday.
