Westside comes close in District 2 major all-stars
The Westside major baseball all-stars saw their season come to an end with an 11-6 loss to Kelseyville in the District 2 Major All-Stars West Tournament in Lakeport on Sunday.
Westside lost its opener to Southshore 14-13 on Saturday and then lost to Kelseyville on Sunday to finish 0-2.
Westside held the lead in both games, only to see the other team regain the lead in the late innings.
Against Kelseyville, Westside fell behind 4-0 after two innings, but scored five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-4 lead. Kelseyville added two runs in the third frame and put the game away with five runs in the fourth.
Chance Stocking added the final extra run for Westside with a solo home run in the fourth.
Zach Troughton also had an extra base hit with a double during the second-inning rally.
Kelseyville belted three home runs in the win.
Westside also had trouble preventing the long ball in a 14-13 loss to Southshore on Saturday. Southshore knocked three out of the park, including a pair by PJ Lopez. The big hits allowed Southshore to build a 7-0 lead in the early going, but Westside rallied for a 9-7 advantage after three innings.
Pitching problems for Southshore provided most of the offense for Westside. Southshore gave up eight runs on eight walks, a hit batsman and two basehits in the bottom of the third. Riley DeWit had one basehit for Westside while Chance Stocking had a two-run single. Six other runs were forced in by bases-loaded walks.
Southshore regained its edge with a six-run rally in the fifth that gave it a 14-10 lead over Westside. However Westside rallied in the bottom of the sixth to make it interesting.
Troughton began the inning with an infield hit. After a sacrifice by Michael Piper moved Troughton to second, Joey Hernandez walked. Troughton and Hernandez both came home on Stocking’s single. Basehits by DeWit and Scott Wells brought Stocking home and put runners at second and third with two outs.
However a popfly to the pitcher ended the game and sent Westside to the elimination game against Kelseyville.
