Small schools end with big meet

A total of 13 high school cross-country teams raced in the Small Schools Championship Wednesday at West Valley High in Cottonwood.

In the boys team standings, Mount Shasta came in first with 35 points, followed by U-Prep (61), Modoc (73), Providence (87), Etna (93) and Williams (171).

There was nobody going to come close to Etna's John Whelan, who completed the three miles in 15-minutes, 59 seconds.

Providence's Tucker Hoffman was second across the finish line, but 58 seconds back at 16:57.

Fellow Lion Guy Sinclair ran an 18:55 for a 15th-place showing, and teammates Nathan Bristley (19:53) and Matthew Perez (19:57) finishing 22nd and 23rd.

Seth Danley turned in a time of 20:59 (33rd) and Jacob Grant, 23:37 (44th).

Jonny Cervantes was the top finisher out of Williams, running a 20:23 to come in 27th.

Also running for the Yellowjackets were Eduardo Velazquez, 21:45 (40th); Eduardo Cano, 22:10 (41st); Chilo Carmona, 24:27 (49th), Alejandro Gomez, 24:36 (51st); Josseph Alva, 24:36.10 (52nd), Isaac Ogaz, 27:41 (55th) and Ulyses Paiz, 28:14 (56th).

The girls race was won by U-Prep with 24 points. Behind them were Mount Shasta (32), Modoc (80) and Williams (110).

Elizabeth Mendez finished 26th for the 'Jackets at 26:22. Maricruz Oveido was right behind her in 26:28 (27th). Kamalpreet Kaur (27:00), Emilee Cranford (27:01), Rebecca White (27:56) and Amanada Lopez (29:58) also ran for Williams finishing in spots 29-33.

The winning time of 19:21 was run by U-Prep's Helen Mino Faukner.
