Coaches named for Lions all-star games

Two of the Northern Section's most successful coaches will be calling the shots during this year's 2012 Chico Breakfast Lions Club Bob Busch Classic scheduled for June 3 in Chico.

Eric Lay, who retired from coaching baseball at Maxwell High following the 2011 season will head up the South squad.

Lay compiled the best career win-loss record in the state, going 254-40 since 2001. During his tenure, the Panthers won six Northern Section championships and seven consecutive league championships. Lay was twice named Northern Section Coach of the Year.

This year's game marks the second time Lay has helmed the South team, having coached in 2006.

In the opposing dugout will be Central Valley's Bob Anderson. He has coached for more than 30 years, being recognized three times as Northern California Coach of the Year, and ESPN's California Coach of the Year in 2009. During his 12 years at Central Valley, the Falcons have a record of 206-93-4.

This will be Anderson's fifth time as coach of the North squad.

The annual all-star softball game will a also be held the same weekend, but beginning at 6 p.m. June 2. Coaches are Joe Spini of Mt. Shasta (North) and Randi Salado of Chico (South).

Each coach was voted for by school sin their respective geographical areas.

Both games are nine-inning contests, with 18-player rosters made up of the best graduating seniors in the Northern Section.
